NETSCAPE AND ACTRA DEVELOP COMMERCEXPERT FAMILY FOR INTERNET COMMERCE AS CROSSWARE BASED ON NETSCAPEŽ ONE PLATFORM

New Products Leverage Common Architecture Based on Java, JavaScript and CORBA To Enable Business Transactions On Extranets and The Internet

MOUNTAIN VIEW, Calif. (September 16, 1997) – Netscape Communications Corporation (NASDAQ: NSCP) today announced that the NetscapeŽ CommerceXpert family of software developed by Actra is being built as a family of Crossware solutions specifically designed to take advantage of the Netscape ONE platform. Crossware applications are a new breed of applications that span operating systems, networks and businesses to include customers and partners in business practices. Netscape CommerceXpert is an integrated family of Internet commerce application solutions for linking people and businesses together over Extranets and the Internet.

The Netscape CommerceXpert family -- including ECXpert, SellerXpert, BuyerXpert, MerchantXpert and PublishingXpert 2.0 -- leverages Netscape ONE as a common platform to provide sophisticated transaction support and enable Electronic Data Interchange (EDI) over the Internet and Extranets. The products have been designed and written as high-end, multi-tiered distributed applications that leverage Java™, JavaScript™ and CORBA for safely conducting business-to-business and business-to-consumer commerce.

"The CommerceXpert family demonstrates the power and flexibility that the Netscape ONE platform offers enterprise developers building Crossware applications," said Marty Cagan, vice president for platform marketing at Netscape. "Developers can use Netscape ONE technologies to design and build mission-critical applications that leverage investments in existing data systems and link people and businesses together."

"The power of the Web to impact business has evolved beyond simple information exchange within an Intranet," said Jim Sha, chief executive officer at Actra. "Real impact now comes from the ability to automate external business processes between customers, suppliers and partners, reducing costs and cycle time. The CommerceXpert family leverages the power of the Netscape ONE platform to deliver this capability."

Part of the CommerceXpert family is Netscape PublishingXpert 2.0, an extensive upgrade announced today to Netscape Publishing System 1.6 that includes numerous product enhancements. It has been completely re-designed and re-written as a high-end, multi-tiered distributed application based on the Netscape ONE platform. This version leverages a CORBA-based transaction server and a Java front-end to provide scalability, high availability and optimal performance to meet the needs of the largest web sites. PublishingXpert 2.0 also leverages Netscape Enterprise Server software as a foundation to deliver personalized content delivery, management of content, protected payment capabilities, subscription and billing services, and advanced search and centralized administration capabilities.

The Netscape ONE platform unifies the standards of the Internet into a single platform for creating powerful applications. It embraces open standards including: Dynamic HTML, Java, JavaScript, Lightweight Directory Access Protocol (LDAP) and Common Object Request Broker Architecture (CORBA). By relying on Netscape ONE technologies to Web-enable their applications, enterprise developers can achieve seamless interoperability, dramatic scalability, on-demand information access, ease of use, central deployment and management, and the capacity to deliver dynamic content -- all within a global network environment.
